摘 要:Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have attracted a great deal of attention as a smart material that can be used in various civil engineering applications. SMAs are a class of metallic alloys that can recover large strains upon load removal with minimal residual deformations. Besides their ability to recover large deformations, SMAs possess excellent corrosion resistance, good energy dissipation capacity, and high fatigue properties. This presentation will discuss three research applications of SMAs to be applied in structural engineering field. First, the development of superelastic fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites will be presented. The superelastic FRP replaces the conventional carbon or glass fibers usually used in FRPs fabrication with small-diameter SMA wires or strands. Second, characterization of the cyclic behavior of relatively large-diameter nickel-titanium (NiTi) SMA cable will be discussed. Finally, assessment of bond behavior between SMA bars and concrete in near-surface-mounted (NSM) strengthening technique will be explored, and an on-going research on the use of SMA bars in NSM strengthening of concrete columns to resist seismic loads will be discussed.
